A wage garnishment is when a court issues an order requiring your employer to withhold a certain amount of your paycheck and send it to the person or institution to whom you owe money or to the appropriate child support agency which will disburse it from there until your debt or obligation is paid off or the order is terminated. Your wages may be garnished if you owe child support, have student loan debt or unpaid taxes, or a judgment has been entered against you for debt such as credit card debt. Different garnishment rules, including legal limits on how much of your paycheck can be garnished, apply to different types of wage garnishments.
